For Immediate Release:
Although Phife Dawg's health has improved after receiving a new kidney
from due to complications from diabetes, the first artist he was
grooming for greater success in the music industry died while
performing on stage in Atlanta.
Chris Thurston aka Jax, a respected independent artist from Atlanta who doubled as
Phife's Dawg's hypeman, suffered a cardiac arrest while performing at a
show with his group BINKIS RECORDS November 3rd (Monday evening). Prior to working closely with Phife & DJ Rasta Root's independent label
Smokin’ Needles Records, Jax was a successful independent artist based in
Atlanta & was a popular fixture in Atlanta's underground hip hop scene
along with his group BINKIS RECORDS. Phife of A Tribe Called
Quest brought JAX on as his hype-man while he was on the road
promoting his solo endeavors when not touring with his ATCQ band mates.
Phife called into DJ Rasta Root’s & Jayforce's Classic Example on
Sirius XM Radio Thursday night to speak on his artist that he felt
could've been one of the best if not for his untimely death. Phife
says he never considered getting his "P Diddy On" in terms of
promoting a new artist until he met Jax.
"I don't just cater to anybody like that. I used to kid him & call
him Ghostface Jr, with his whole swagger & the way he attacked the
tracks. His energy was also similar to Busta's (Rhymes)" says Phife.
T.I.'s current deejay & mixtape king, "DJ Drama" also weighed in on
Jax’s passing. DJ Drama, known for his "Gangsta Grillz" mixtapes &
radio show served as Jax's first deejay in Atlanta during the early
part of his career. "It's crazy because so many memories are coming
to me...Jax was one of the first people I met when I came to Atlanta.
This was my original family. I remember one of the first songs we
ever did together called "Shorties Be Coming Through" that I did the
scratches on & it just brings back great memories. We did it for the
love...We performed at the Rocksteady celebration years ago & even
after I was no longer with the group, 'Binkis Recs', he always let me
know he was proud of me. It was just good times man."
Many independent artists tied to the underground scene say that Jax
possessed the talent, personality, & work ethic to eventually become a
star if not for his untimely death. DJ Drama also says new artists
can learn alot from an artist like Jax who still managed to release 6
independent albums, largely available via itunes, despite not being
signed to a major label.
"I wouldn't be in the position that I'm in if it wasn't for some of
the influence that he had on my life. The most important thing to
know is that at the end of the day it comes down to your heart & your
passion. No matter what amount of success you may get ....no matter
what type money or no money, at any degree, its about this music."
Funeral services are currently set for Saturday November 15th in
"Jax"'s native hometown of Queens, NY. He's survived by mother, his
brother Cruen Thurston, & his wife Lisa Thurston whom he just had just
married to just one month prior to his passing.
This edition of Classic Example is dedicated to our friend Jax (Forever King)
